Earl of Northumbria

Earl of Northumbria was a title in the Anglo- Danish, late Anglo-Saxon and early Anglo- Norman period in England. The Earldom of Northumbria was the successor of Ealdormanry Bamburgh, which in turn was the successor of the independent kingdom of Bernicia. At the time of the Kingdom of Jorvik ruled here the Earl of Deira. Later, Northumbria was unified under the Bernicia dynasty, which ruled until 1041 Bernicia, while in other York, Knut the Great appointed Earl sat that should reign over Northumbria. In the early Anglo- Norman period Northumbria was divided into the Earldom of York and the earldom of Northumberland, where a large piece also went to the Bishop of Durham.
