Earl of Seafield

Earl of Seafield is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by a branch of the Ogilvy family.

Ancestral home of the family Cullen House in Cullen, Moray.

Award

The title was created in 1701 for James Ogilvy. This was a Minister and Lord Keeper of the Kingdom of Scotland. He was later Scottish Lord Chancellor.

The title was sealed with a special successor clause stating that if the respective Earl has no son, the dignity passes to the eldest daughter.

Subordinate title

The first Earl had been raised already in 1698 created Lord Ogilvy of Cullen and Viscount of Seafield. 1701, he was awarded concurrently with the earldom the title Lord Ogilvy of Deskford and Cullen and Viscount of Reid Haven. All titles are in the Peerage of Scotland and are provided with the same special successor clause as the Earldom. These titles are listed as subordinate titles from the respective Earl.

The respective heir takes the courtesy title Viscount ( of) Reid Haven.

More titles

An ancestor of the first Earl had been raised in 1616 to Lord Ogilvy of Deskford. His son, a great-grandfather of the first Earl of Seafield, was appointed in 1638 to the Earl of Findlater. These titles could be inherited only in the male line and extinguished in 1811 with the death of the fourth Earl of Seafield (or seventh Earl of Findlater ).

In 1641 the title of Earl of Findlater was again awarded to the Earl, however, now with a special successor clause stating that the dignity could be inherited in extinction of man tribe also to the daughter of the Earl and her husband, what then happened. Also, this title became extinct 1811.

The fifth Earl of Seafield, a descendant of a daughter of the first Earl, had his father been the title of baronet, of Colquhoun, in the County of Dumbarton, inherited. This was created in 1625 and was renewed in 1704 with a special successor clause in relation to the son and belongs to the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. This dignity was 1915, when the eleventh Earl died of a wound he had suffered in the First World War, to another relative, since it can only be inherited in the male line.

The seventh Earl in 1858 for Baron Strathspey, of Strathspey in the Counties of Inverness and Moray, appointed. This title was, otherwise than by the Scottish titles, an automatic seat in the House of Lords joined because he belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He went out in 1884, as the eighth Earl died without a male descendant. A few months later, the barony was then renewed for the ninth Earl. 1915 then dropped this title, however, together with the baronetcy on the distant relatives, as the eleventh Earl, although a daughter but had no son.
