James Ogilvy, 4th Earl of Findlater

James Ogilvy, 4th Earl of Findlater and 1st Earl of Seafield (* July 11, 1664; † August 19, 1730 ) was a Scottish politician and Lord Chancellor of Scotland.

He was the son of James Ogilvy, 3rd Earl of Findlater and Lady Anne Montgomerie. On June 24, 1701, he was appointed 1st Earl of Seafield. From 1713 to 1714 he was the Privy Seal of Scotland. He was appointed twice to the Lord Chancellor of Scotland, the first time from 1702 to 1704 and again from 1705 to the Union with England in 1707. Upon the death of his father in 1711 he inherited the title Earl of Findlater.

In 1687, he married Anne Dunbar, daughter of Sir William Dunbar. With her he had three children, of whom his only son inherited his title:

  • James Ogilvy († July 1, 1764 ), 5th Earl of Findlater, 2nd Earl of Seafield;
  • Elizabeth Ogilvy (* 1692, † September 24, 1778 ) ∞ 1710 Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale;
  • Janet Ogilvy (* 1695, † December 25, 1720 )
