Écublens, Fribourg

Ecublens ( Freiburg Patois Ekubyin? / I ) is a municipality in the district of the canton of Fribourg Glane in Switzerland. The former German name Scubilingen is no longer used today.

Geography

Ecublens is on 594 m above sea level. M., 13 km southwest of the district town Romont and 7 km south of Moudon (air line). The farming village stretches along the western flank of the Broye, at the foot of the forest height Le Signal, in the southwest of Fribourg Mittelland.

The area of ​​4.9 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the headwaters of the Broye. The elongated in north-south direction is bounded to the east by the Broye. This is in the southern part of a wide -lined meadows Talniederung, while it is a gorge dug in the northern section in the molasse of the Central Plateau and may be accompanied by sandstone cliffs. To the west of the municipality extends to the bottom slope of the adjacent height where it reaches 750 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Ecublens. To the north, the area extends over the plateau of Villangeaux up in the Bois de Sépey; in the south part and the lower part of the valley of the Parimbot to Ecublens. From the municipality surface 1997 7 % was attributable to settlements, 24 % of forest and shrubs, 67% to agriculture and slightly more than 2% was unproductive land.

To Ecublens includes the villages Eschiens (603 m above sea level. M. ) south of Parimbot and Villangeaux ( 673 m above sea level. M. ) on a plateau above the Broyetal and some Hofsiedlungen and individual farms. Neighboring communities of Ecublens are Montet ( Glâne), Rue and Auboranges in the Canton of Fribourg and Ferlens and Vulliens in the canton of Vaud.

Population

With 304 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Ecublens one of the small communities of the Canton of Fribourg. Of the 91.4% inhabitants are French-speaking, English-speaking and 3.4 % 2.6 % speak German (as of 2000). The population of Ecublens amounted in 1900 to 277 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased to 1940 (325 inhabitants) to slowly before been a decrease by almost 38% to 203 people by strong emigration until 1980. Since then a slight population growth was recorded again.

Economy

Ecublens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the dairy industry, animal husbandry and agriculture have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions Moudon and Oron- la -Ville.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a link road from Rue to Mézières. On August 25, 1876, the railway line from Moudon after Palézieux -Gare was taken with a station in Ecublens in operation.

History

The territory of Ecublens was settled very early, which is attested by finds of a tomb from the La Tène period and wall foundations of a Roman building at Villangeaux. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1180 under the name Escublens. Later the spellings Escublans ( 1220 ) and Escubleins ( 1226 ) published. The name goes back to the Burgundian personal names Scubila and means with the suffix -ene as much as the people of Scubila.

Ecublens belonged since the Middle Ages to the rule Rue, which was under the protection of the House of Savoy. When the Bernese 1536 Vaud conquered, the village came under the rule of Freiburg and the Bailiwick Rue was assigned. After the collapse of the ancien régime (1798 ) was one Ecublens during the Helvetic Republic and the subsequent time to the district Rue and was incorporated in 1848 in the District Glane.

Already since 1883 the three villages Ecublens, Eschiens and Villangeaux were administered together, but remained politically independent municipalities. On March 1, 1969 Villangeaux and Eschiens were incorporated to Ecublens. As part of the canton of Fribourg funded since 2000 municipal mergers Ecublens should merge together with Promasens and Gillarens with Rue. Due to the low retention in the village people, the idea is not pursued at the moment.

Attractions

In Ecublens is built in 1939 and the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Cross. The village belongs to the parish Promasens.
