Edgar Benson

Edgar John Benson PC ( born May 28, 1923 in Cobourg, Ontario; † 2 September 2011 in Ottawa, Ontario) was a Canadian accountant, diplomat, university professor and politician of the Liberal Party.

Life

After school he began his military service in the armed forces and served between 1941 and 1945 during World War II in Europe. He then studied Business Administration at Queen's University, Kingston and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce ( B.Comm. ) From. He then worked as an auditor and also a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and later a lecturer and assistant professor of Business Administration at Queen 's University.

His political career began as a candidate of the Liberal Party when he was first elected in the election of 18 June 1962 as a member of the lower house and this until September 1972 Kingston constituency represented.

During his parliamentary membership, he initially from May 1963 to June 1964 Parliamentary Secretary of the Treasury before he was subsequently appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as Minister of National Income in the 19 federal government and occupy this position until January 1968. In addition, he was between October 1966 and April 1968 and President of the Treasury.

Following the appointment of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in April 1968, he was appointed as Minister of Finance in the 20th Federal Government and held that office until January 1972. At the same time he still retained until July 1968, the Office of the President of the Treasury. He was last in a cabinet reshuffle in January 1972 Minister of National Defence, resigned from this office, however, on August 31, 1972 back because he (Canadian Transport Commission ) was appointed September 1, 1972 President of the Canadian Transport Commission.

Last Benson was 1982-1985 Ambassador to Ireland.
