Edgar du Perron

Edgar du Perron ( officially Charles Edgar du Perron, nickname Eddy, born November 2, 1899 in Meester Cornelis Batavia, Dutch East Indies; † 14 May 1940 Bergen ( North Holland ) ) was a Dutch poet, writer and journalist.

Life

Edgar du Perron came from an old family with ancestors from France. His parents were very rich in Dutch East Indies. When they had sold their possessions overseas, they bought a castle in Gistoux ( Wallonia, Belgium). He was born on 2 November 1899 in the Dutch East Indies, or more precisely in a time Meester Cornelis said location near Batavia. There are now neighborhoods of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. The young Du Perron felt there despite his friendship with the French poet André Malraux not happy and moved to Montmartre in Paris, where he wrote his first works in French, and later to Holland. Du Perron was friends for a time with the painter Carel Willink, who made some book illustrations for him. Du Perron wrote back then, especially short stories and poems. In 1931 he co-founded the influential literary magazine Forum. A year later he married Elizabeth de Roos. In 1940 he became ill and died on May 14 of heart failure.

Works

As you Perrons main work is the novel Het van herkomst country ( the country of origin, 1935) considered. This work is one that his wife applied, mostly playing in the Dutch East Indies autobiography. The book is considered one of the most important works of Dutch literature of the Interbellums ( 1918-1940 ). Du Perron wrote many poems (including the bundle Parlando, 1930), short stories, magazine and newspaper articles. Du Perron was critical of the then reality, and opposite to the tolerant, especially in the Dutch East Indies attitude towards National Socialism, which he saw as a serious threat.

To commemorate his works, 1994, a literary association was launched, the E. Du Perron - Genootschap.
