Edgar Savisaar

Edgar Savisaar ( born May 31, 1950 in the municipality of Harku ) is an Estonian politician. He was from 1990 to 1992 Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia.

Childhood

Edgar Savisaar was born in the Women's Prison of Harku. The parents were arrested in the summer of 1949 by the Soviet occupation authorities. The father was sentenced to seven years of deportation and exile to Siberia, the mother to prison.

Early years

After graduation in 1968 Edgar Savisaar closed in 1973 completed his studies in history at the University of Tartu and subsequently worked as a research assistant. In 1980 he made ​​a second examination in philosophy. From 1980 to 1988 Savisaar was employed in the State Planning Committee of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. 1988/89 he was director of the consulting firm Mainor.

Politician

In the period of perestroika Savisaar sat for independence of Estonia by the Soviet Union and the respect for democracy and human rights a. On April 3, 1990, he was Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Estonia and thus head of government. From 1992 to 1995 Savisaar served as Deputy Chief of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) from April to October 1995 Minister of the Interior. He was forced to resign because of a hacking scandal. From 1996 to 2001 Savisaar was chairman of the City Council of Tallinn, 2001-2004 Mayor of the city. He was from April 2005 Minister of Economic Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip. In the Riigikogu elections in March 2007, the Keskerakond second strongest party was a coalition with the party of reform, however, did not come off. For this reason Savisaar has the place started as mayor of Tallinn again in 2007.

Savisaar is chairman of the Estonian Centre Party, founded in 1991 ( Keskerakond ).

Private life

Edgar Savisaar was married three times and has four children. His last wife Vilja Savisaar (born Laanaru ), with whom he was married from 1996 to 2009, is also politically active in the Centre Party. In the European elections in Estonia, she was elected to the European Parliament in 2009.
