Edgard Pisani

Edgard Pisani ( born November 9, 1918 in Tunis ) is a French politician of the Socialist Party and was European Commissioner in the years 1981 to 1984.

Life and work

Pisani is of Maltese origin and took over 1944 office as police prefect of police in liberated France. He then worked at the Interior Ministry and the Defense Ministry.

From 1947 he was managing director of the department of Haute- Marne, 1954-1961 Senator, and then to 1966 Minister of Agriculture.

From 1967 he sat in the French National Assembly and from 1974 to 1981 he was a senator for the Haute- Marne. Then he worked as Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid in the Thorn Commission. From 1985 to 1988 he was then High Commissioner of New Caledonia.

From 1988 to 1995 Pisani led the Institut du monde arabe.
