Edo de Waart

Edo de Waart AO (born 1 June 1941 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch conductor.

Life

De Waart studied oboe, piano and conducting at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He completed his studies in 1962 and the following year was an oboist in the prestigious Concertgebouw Orchestra. 1964, only 23 years old, he won the Dimitri Mitropoulos Conducting Competition in New - York. Part of the price was that for a year he was allowed to Leonard Bernstein assist with the New York Philharmonic. After his return to the Netherlands he took a the same position under Bernard Haitink with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Musical interest

De Waart is known as an expert on new music. He conducted the premieres of most of the works of John Adams and made recordings of compositions by Adams and Steve Reich.

De Waart is particularly interested in opera. He conducted the premiere of John Adams ' opera Nixon in China at the Houston Grand Opera and conducted productions at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976, at the Opéra Bastille, at the Metropolitan Opera and the Salzburg Festival. He conducted Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung been twice: at the San Francisco Opera and concert at the Sydney Opera House.
