Eduardo Jiménez de Aréchaga

Eduardo Jiménez de Arechaga ( born June 8, 1918 in Montevideo, † April 5, 1994 in Punta del Este ) was a lawyer from Uruguay. He completed his legal education at the Universidad de la República and graduated in 1942 with a doctorate. At the same university he was from 1946 to 1969 worked as a professor of international law, in addition, he also taught at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay.

He was from 1947 the Department of Affairs of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN ), and several times in his home country delegations to meetings of the UN General Assembly. From 1961 to 1969 he was a member of the International Law Commission of the UN, during which time he led the Commission in 1963 as Chairman. From 15 May 1968 to 17 December 1968, he held the post of Minister of the Interior of Uruguay. Subsequently, he worked from 1970 to 1979 as a judge of the International Court of Justice ( ICJ). In the last three years of his tenure, from 1976 to 1979, he was present President of the Court. During this time he received in 1978 the Manley O. Hudson Medal of the American Society of International Law, which had already appointed him ten years ago an honorary member. Under his leadership, among other things, a revision of the rules of procedure of the ICJ has been successfully completed, which had taken about a decade to complete.

Eduardo Jiménez de Arechaga returned after the end of his nine-year tenure for family reasons in his home country. He worked in the aftermath successfully several times as a mediator and twice as ad hoc judge at the ICJ. From 1979 he was a member of the newly established Administrative Tribunal of the World Bank, which he headed for ten years as president. He came in 1994 in a traffic accident. Eduardo Jiménez de Arechaga was in his work as influenced by ideological views and is considered one of the most outstanding Latin American international lawyers of his time.
