Eduardo López de Romaña

Eduardo López de Romaña Alvizuri ( born March 19, 1847 in Arequipa, † May 26 1912 in Yura ) was a Peruvian politician and from 1899 to 1903 Peruvian President.

Life

López de Romaña was born in Arequipa, the son of a local aristocratic family. He studied in Europe, where he worked as an engineer. Upon his return to Peru in 1874, he worked in agriculture and engineering. He tried without success to planning a railway line through the Amazon jungle.

López de Romaña belonged to the Partido of Civil; he arrived at the top of an alliance of Partido Partido Civil and Demócrata to the presidency. Originally the candidacy had been plotted his brother Alejandro, who, however, renounced in favor of Eduardo. The elections of 1899, he won with 97 % of votes. His decapitated opposition candidates were Manuel Candamo and Guillermo Billinghurst.
