Eduardo Wilde

Eduardo Wilde ( born June 15, 1844 in Tupiza, Potosi Department, † September 5, 1913 in Brussels) was an Argentine physician, diplomat, politician and writer.

Life

Wilde came from his father's side of English immigrants. He was the doctor's son Diego Wild and his wife, a Criolla from the province of Tucumán. His parents had fled during the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas into exile in Bolivia, where he was born in 1844.

After returning Wilde visited in Concepción del Uruguay ( Entre Ríos ), the Colegio Nacional (founded in 1849 by Justo José de Urquiza ). Subsequently, he studied medicine at the Universidad de Buenos Aires ( UBA) and was able to complete this study in 1870 very successfully with his thesis " El hipo " ( The hiccups ).

Already during his studies, Wilde had distinguished himself by the aid during a cholera epidemic and also for his selflessness in the fight against yellow fever epidemic in 1871, he was much praised. In 1872 he accepted an appointment as Professor of Medicine at the UBA. Politically interested and engaged, he was elected as deputies in the Argentine Congress. 1882 he was appointed President Julio Argentino Roca as Minister of Education and Justice. This office he resigned in 1886 and served until 1889 as Minister of the Interior.

This year, Wilde joined the diplomatic service. He represented his country only in the U.S., and later at the Spanish court in Madrid. From there he went to the same office at the Dutch court, and thence to Brussels. There he died at the age of 69 years and found his final resting place in the cemetery of La Recoleta ( Buenos Aires ).
