Edward Bernds

Edward Bernds ( born July 12, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois; † 20 May 2000 Van Nuys, California ) was an American film director, sound engineer and screenwriter who was mainly known by numerous B-movies.

Life

Bernd worked in the 1920s as a sound engineer, first for radio stations in Chicago. There he met Howard Campbell, know, he got a job at United Artists in Hollywood over the 1928. Later he moved to Columbia Pictures, where he belonged to the permanent staff of Frank Capra.

His career as a director and screenwriter he began only in 1945 for Columbia Pictures with the Three- Stooges short film A Bird in the Head. This was not published until after his second film Micro- Phonies. In the next twenty years he turned almost a hundred films, among other Three- Stooges films also some Western and sci-fi trash films.

1957 received Bernds and Elwood Ullman an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. This was, however, an oversight: Actually, John Patrick should have been nominated for the upper crust, but there was a mix-up with a film of the same name, on the Ullman and Bob's were involved. The nomination was subsequently withdrawn.

Published in 1999, Bernd's autobiography under the title Mr. Bernds Goes to Hollywood.
