Edward Graham, Baron Graham of Edmonton

Thomas Edward ( Ted ) Graham, Baron Graham of Edmonton, PC ( born March 26, 1925) is a British politician ( Labour and Co-operative Party ).

Life and career

Graham visited the Co-operative College and had from 1939 different positions in the co -operative movement and was secretary at the national level ( National Secretary ) of the Co-operative Party by 1967 until 1974. He was from 1961 councilor in the District Council of the Municipal Borough of Enfield and was after the restructuring of the Council of the London Borough of Enfield; he was 10 years its Chairman (Leader). From 1961 to 1968 he was Chairman ( Chair ) of the Housing and Redevelopment Committee.

In 1966 he went to the constituency of West Enfield. From the general election from 1974 to 1983 he was Member of Parliament for the constituency of Edmonton. He lost his seat as Labour lost the election hands down against Dr Ian Twinn.

From 1974 to 1976 he was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department of Prices and Consumer Protection and the Government Whip from 1976 to 1979 as Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. From 1979 to 1981 Graham was Whip of the opposition. From 1980 to 1983 he was opposition spokesman for the environment.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the election defeat Graham was on September 12, 1983 Life peer as Baron Graham of Edmonton, of Edmonton appointed in Greater London. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 26 October 1983.

As subjects of political interest he calls Local Government, Consumer Affairs and the Environment. As states of interest he calls Israel and the United States. Graham was 1983-1990 opposition spokesman for the Environment, Northern Ireland and defense. Also during this period he was Oppositionswhip. He was from 1990 to 1995 Opposition spokesman for National Heritage ( Opposition Spokesperson for National Heritage ( Tourism) ). From 1990 to 1997 he was Labour Chief Whip. During the same period he was also Deputy Speaker. From 1997 to 2000 Graham Deputy Chair of Committees was. He was from 1997 to 2000 a member of the Co-operative Party in the same period Chairman ( Chair ) of the Labour Peers ' Group.

On 18 December 1987, he was the only member of the House of Lords, which was directed at the Local Government Act 1986 ( Amendment) Bill by John Giffard, 3rd Earl of Halsbury, pronounced, which should prevent the support of homosexuality by local authorities. This template became law as section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 when it was re-introduced by Representative David Wilshire in the House.

Since 1990, Graham has been a member of the Refreshments Committee.

Other offices and honors

Graham was Chairman ( Chair ) of the UK Co-operative Council and in 1987 was President of the Co-operative Congress. He is president of the Institute of Meat and patron ( patron ) of the Ancient Order of Foresters, and the Labour Party in the constituency of Edmonton.

He is a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association. Since 1998, Graham is a member of the Privy Council. Graham is President of the Co -operative Group Consumers Organization and Vice Chairman ( Vice Chair ) of the Association for the Retail Industry. He was ( Hon MA) in 1989. He is an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. In addition, Graham Fellow of the Institute of Management and the Royal Society of Arts.

Family

Graham's cousin Oona King, Baroness King of Bow was also Member of Parliament for the Labour Party.
