Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh

Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh KP GCVO FRS ( born November 10, 1847 in Clontarf, Dublin, † October 7, 1927 in London) was an Irish businessman and philanthropist.

Life

Edward Cecil Guinness in 1847 as the third son of Sir Benjamin Guinness ( 1798-1868 ) and Elizabeth Guinness ( 1813-1865 ) was born. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin. Due to the economic success of the Guinness brewery, which he only together with his brother Arthur in 1876 and then ran alone after the death of his father, Guinness was from 1886 the richest man in Ireland. In 1889 he retired from the management of the brewery, but remained the majority shareholder. In 1891 he was created Baron Iveagh, of Iveagh in the County of Down, collected, after he had been already collected a baronet in 1885. 1895 Guinness Knight of the Order of Saint Patrick was. 1905, the title Viscount Iveagh, he was awarded. After his election to the Royal Society in 1906, Guinness was elected in 1908 to the Chancellor of the University of Dublin, he held this office until his death. In 1910 he was appointed a Knight of the Royal Victorian Order, and in 1919 the title Earl of Iveagh and Viscount Elveden, of Elveden were awarded to him in the County of Suffolk.

Like his father and his brother, sat Guinness his wealth to charity one. He founded in 1888 the Guinness Trust, later as Iveagh Trust announced the offered accommodation in London and Dublin poor. The St. Patrick's Cathedral, he donated money for a new set of bells, the restoration of the bell tower and numerous repairs. Furthermore, he had to create around 1901 St. Patrick's park next to the cathedral as a public garden.

In 1907 he supported the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton in financing the Nimrod Expedition.

The Earl died in 1927 in London. He was buried in Elveden, Suffolk.

Family

Edward Cecil Guinness was married since May 20, 1873 his cousin Adelaide Maria Guinness († 1916). The marriage produced three children:

  • Walter Guinness, 1st Baron Moyne ( 1880-1944 )
