Edward Moran

Edward Moran ( born August 19, 1829 in Bolton, Greater Manchester, † June 8, 1901 in New York City ) was an American painter of English descent.

Life

When Edward Moran was 15 years old, his family emigrated from England to the United States and settled first settled in Philadelphia. After a short operation in his father's weaving Edward Moran henceforth devoted his artistic work. Moran, who traveled a lot, met in 1862 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1872 he opened his first studio in New York, in 1878, he spent a lot of time again in Europe and lived for several years in Paris.

He devoted himself to historical painting, with some of his oil paintings, he wanted to capture the seafaring history and was considered one of the finest marine painters of his time. Many family members Morans were also painters, such as his brothers Peter and Thomas Moran and his two sons, Léon (1864-1941) and Percy. Edward Moran was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Royal Watercolour Society in 1873 and an associate member of the National Academy and died at the age of 71 years in New York City.
