Edward Yang

Edward Yang (Chinese杨德昌, Pinyin Yáng DECHANG ) ( born November 6, 1947 in Shanghai, † June 29, 2007 in Beverly Hills, California ) was a Chinese film director and screenwriter from Taiwan.

Life

Edward Yang grew up in Taiwan, studied in the United States Computer Design and then worked at a company in Seattle. At thirty, he decided to return as a filmmaker in his native Taiwan. He wrote the screenplays of his films basically self and made ​​her first appearance as a screenwriter of The Winter 1905. His first film as writer and director was this day at the beach. Together with Hou Hsiao -Hsien, he was one of the representatives of the Taiwanese New Wave. For his film Yi Yi, he received, among others, the award for the best director working at the film festival in Cannes 2000 in 2000.

Yang died in late June 2007 at the age of 59 years in Beverly Hills, Calif., of complications from colon cancer. He is survived by his wife, concert pianist Kaili Peng, a son ( * 2001), a younger sister and a brother.
