In the early eighties, Collins was with his band Orange Juice in search of the perfect pop song. The realization of this ideal he succeeded in many cases, for example with Rip It Up and Start Again, Simon Reynolds borrowed its title for his famous post-punk book.

In summer 1995, Collins landed with A Girl Like You his biggest hit, which reached number 3 in the UK and # 4 in Germany.

2003, A Girl Like You also part of the soundtrack for the film Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle.

Collins lives with his long -time partner Grace Maxwell, who is his manager at the same time. The couple has a son and lives in London.

In a radio interview on 18 February 2005 Collins said he did not feel well, led his nausea and dizziness but back on food poisoning. Two days later he was taken to the Royal Free Hospital in London, after he had apparently suffered a stroke. On February 25 of that year he underwent a second stroke after a surgery followed by rehabilitation.

In 2010 he published with Losing Sleep, the first album, which was recorded entirely after his stroke and subsequent surgery. The 2007 released album Home Again Collins had still taken before his stroke, but can only then mix completely. On Losing Sleep Collins is accompanied by numerous guest musicians, including Johnny Marr ( The Smiths ) and Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand.
