Eeltsje Halbertsma

Eeltsje Hiddes Halbertsma ( born October 8, 1797 in Grou, † March 22, 1858 ) was a Dutch- Frisian writer. Halbertsma is the author of the unofficial anthem Frisian De Alde Friezen.

Life

Halbertsma studied medicine in Leiden and Heidelberg. Since 1818, he worked as a doctor in Purmerend and later until 1854 in his hometown of Grou. Together with his brothers Justus and Tsjalling Hiddes Halbertsma he called the motion of the neufriesischen literature to life ( De Fryske Beweging ). They were among the first who combined the ideas of Romanticism directly with Frisian folk tales. Your collection Rimen s Teltsjes ( poems and stories ) is still a westfriesischer classic. 1822 appeared the first time the Frisian song collection De Lapekoer fen gift Scroar ( The rag basket by Gabe Schneider). In addition to these written Eeltsje Halbertsma numerous Frisian own stories. In 1857 he translated Klaus Groth's book of poems Quickborn from Low German into Frisian.
