Geography
The small town flare leeches with about 4,100 inhabitants, is located at the junction of highways 81 and 180, in the midst of the city triangle Aschersleben, Halberstadt and Magdeburg. It is about 20 kilometers southwest of Magdeburg halfway to Halberstadt in Salzlandkreis in Egelner hollow at the Bode.
History
The fertile lowlands Bode to leeches was inhabited in the Palaeolithic of people. Leeches was justified perhaps by the Germanic tribe of the Angles. At least the name " leeches " is etymologically back to the people of the fishing. The town was first attested in 941 as " Osteregulon " with a new fort by King Otto I.. This fort served to protect the ford across the river Bode, met before the military roads from Erfurt, Quedlinburg and Goslar, and, united to a road, German to Magdeburg, the first capital of the Roman Empire led the nation further.

So there are leeches in all types of schools, medical center, pharmacy, child care, two banks, a civil office of the district, a modern sports center with swimming pool, football stadium, beach volleyball court and a two-field sports hall and three supermarkets. With diverse event offerings in particular on the Wasserburg leeches and on the marketplace, the city has established itself as a cultural center.

Culture and sights
In addition to the city center around the market square you will find the Town Hall of 1897, the Eagle Pharmacy ( 1700 ), 1206, first mentioned Church of St. Christopher with the oldest evangelical rectory of East Germany ( 1581) and behind the water castle from the 13th century with substantial modifications to the Renaissance palace in the 16th century. In the castle there is a museum of pre-and early - as well as local history, a painting school and an outdoor stage. In the foyer of the museum, it is possible to be married in a civil ceremony.
In leeches held every two years instead of the International Choir Festival "Sine musica nulla vita ", premiered in 2001 at the initiative of Egelner chamber choir Young Voices choir and its conductor Ralf Schubert from the baptism. Since its inception almost 20 choirs from six countries took part.
Since 1997, a stage spectacle in the Egelner Wasserburg is organized every two years by the Egelner youth theater group Young Actors headed by Ingo Böhlert.
In the southern part of the city leeches the monastery Marie chair is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Saxony-Anhalt.
In the wind farm leeches North is the prototype of the wind turbine Enercon E -112 with a capacity of 4.5 MW. This was so at the time of establishment of the largest wind turbine in the world.
A Bronze Age grave circle system indicates prehistoric settlement of the area.
