Eglinton West line

The Eglinton West Subway is an unfinished subway line in the Canadian city of Toronto. The construction work began in 1994, but were stopped in the following year by the Government of Ontario and have since not been resumed.

Planning history

Published in 1985, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC ) Expansion Programme Network 2011. By 2011, various projects should be implemented to enhance the tangential connections to the north of Toronto. It provided, among other things, a busway along Eglinton Avenue. This should start at the Eglinton West subway station and to the city limits of Mississauga lead - with the possibility of later conversion to a metro line. The time still independent cities Etobicoke and York pushed out, however, perform the new transport link from the start as a subway. In the Council of Metropolitan Toronto they brought their concerns repeatedly to language.

The guided by the NDP provincial government under Bob Rae finally promised in 1994 to support the metro project financially. In the same year, construction began on the first section to York Centre. Below the existing Eglinton West station of the Yonge- University - Spadina Line was a second station level. However, in 1995 won the Progressive Conservatives, the election and the new government of Mike Harris possessed because of the large budget deficit in the province for an immediate halt to construction. The lower level of the station Eglinton West, which was under construction stage was filled and has since remained unused.

Further development

In March 2007, the City of Toronto and the TTC introduced the Transit City expansion program that no longer relies on subways, but the construction is far more cost -effective light rail provides. The planned line Eglinton Crosstown LRT is scheduled to begin at the Toronto airport, follow the entire Eglinton Avenue and lead up to Scarborough. This would create a 33 km long east-west connection north of the city center. The middle section between Keele Street and Laird Street (approx. 10 km) is intended to be underground; by the existing lower level of the station Eglinton West could be still used. The provincial government promised the funding in May 2009.
