Egon Hirt

Egon Hirt ( born August 16, 1960 in Neustadt in the Black Forest ) is a former German ski racer. He scored early 1980s at the best technicians of the German national ski team. Between 1981 and 1984 he was a three time German champion in giant slalom.

Biography

Hirt was born the son of a sporting goods dealer, and grew up in the Black Forest. He played his first race at the age of six years for his hometown club SC Neustadt. Even as a teenager, his extraordinary talent became apparent: in 1972 he was German Alpine students master four years later German Youth Champion in slalom and third in the Junior European Championships in Gällivare.

His first big success in the men's area, succeeded in 1981 by winning the German championship in the giant slalom and a second place in the slalom. Two other champion in giant slalom followed in 1982 and 1984. Though he belonged nationally to the best technicians, his achievements were little constant in the World Cup. Only three times he went into the top ten. Best finish was a ninth place in the giant slalom in the domestic Todtnau in February 1983. Too at World Championships and Olympic Games ended Hirt initially just behind the leading group. At the 1982 World Cup in Schladming, he was 15th in the slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo 13th in the giant slalom.

In 1985 he succeeded at the World Championships in Bormio, Italy is one of the best results of a German Skirennläufers since the 1978 World Cup at home. In the giant slalom, he went surprisingly to fourth place. Despite the biggest success of his playing career, his performance was little public attention, since in the same race his team mate Markus Wasmeier with the world title - the first for the German men's team for 21 years - laid the foundation for his success career.

At the height of his career Hirt announced his retirement from the national team and focused on his training as a ski instructor. After passing the State instructors examination he was admitted to the teaching team of the German Ski Instructors Association 1986. Today, he heads the sports house inherited from the parents, and operates in Waldau and on the Feldberg in the Black Forest ski schools.
