The parliamentary elections in Egypt were held in 2010 in a first round on November 28, 2010 run-off elections on December 5, 2010. Were defined the 508 seats in the Egyptian parliament. Ten additional seats determined by the President. Due to a mixture of blatant electoral fraud and boycott of the main opposition parties, the ruling National Democratic Party of Hosni Mubarak won almost 80 % of the available seats.

Participant

Among other things, the then banned Muslim Brotherhood, the largest opposition party wanted to participate in the elections. According to her own account she has been exposed since the announcement police pursuits. Around 150 members were arrested and released after some time. Directly before the Election Day, the group of a thousand arrested members. From the Muslim Brotherhood 135 candidates were placed for 508 seats. Of these, about one fifth was disqualified in advance of the election commission. In the last elections in 2005, the Muslim Brotherhood had brought a fifth of the votes. Since the movement was banned as candidates to its members as independent candidates.

The opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei called for a boycott of the election in September 2005. The Kifaya movement also called for a boycott.

Implementation

In the elections, there were violent clashes with use of weapons. Here, four people were killed there were many reports of electoral fraud. So not all voters were left to the ballot box and vote buying was widespread.

After the first official results omitted after the first ballot 207 of the 508 seats on the ruling party NDP. The Muslim Brotherhood was able to secure a mandate on the first ballot. The turnout was 35 percent.

The runoff election was held on December 5. From the Muslim Brotherhood still about 24 candidates were represented. However, they were just like the New Wafd Party announced that they boycott the runoff election. The reasons for the massive fraud of the ruling party were given.

Overall result

Under these conditions, the party won 420 of the President of the 508 available seats, 70 went to independent candidates 14 seats to other parties, including the Wafd Party with 6 seats and the Progressive National Unionist party with 5 seats. The results for four additional seats were not disclosed "because of violence during the electoral process ." This has given the Muslim Brotherhood, which is the largest opposition party, lost its entire 88 seats so far and none of the 100 recognized opposition leader and former independent parliamentarians can achieve his previous seat again.
