El Paso, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

El Paso is since 1837 an independent municipality on the Canary island of La Palma, which is part of the Spanish province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Character

El Paso is geographically the largest of the 14 municipalities of La Palma. The municipality is located in the center of the island, bordering on almost every other municipality (except Tazacorte ) and is the only one without access to the Atlantic Ocean.

In the territory of the municipality of El Paso are predominantly arable land and forests with Canarian pine. The municipal area a huge caldera includes the Taburiente, with many valleys. This area is designated as a National Park since 1954.

The majority of the population is rural. Among the agricultural products sector, in particular wine, almonds and some fruit species.

In the Barranco de las Canales, below a cemetery, are the rock engravings of El Cementerio and Fajana, which constitute the cultural heritage of the Guanches.

Demographics

El Paso learned in the 1980s, a strong population growth ( 1981 to 1990: 22.0 %), which has since weakened or passed into a slight decline in population.
