Puntallana

Puntallana is one of the 14 municipalities of the Canary Island of La Palma. The valley is the administrative center of the municipality. South borders the municipality to which the island 's capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma.

Demographics

General

This area, which was named Tenagua, was designated as the seventh kingdom of the island. The soil is fertile, blessed the landscape of the trade winds, which bring the clouds with them. Through it created numerous sources. In the area there are laurel forests, a relic of the Tertiary. The most common agricultural product was the grain. The economic development of the community often clung to periods of bad harvests and famine, which meant that people immigrated to Cuba and Venezuela. Today, the products Fruit, vegetables, wine, and especially the banana meet the demands of new markets. A more economical alternative is the more modest range of temperate tourism.

  • Viewpoint of Las Vueltas de San Juanito in the Barranco Seco
  • The Playa de Nogales on the cliffs of Puntallana, here there used to be sea turtles.
  • The church of San Juan Bautista (John the Baptist ) existed after the Conquest, but was rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside it harbors the Holy Patron, a Flemish carving from the 16th century.
  • The pilgrimage chapel and viewpoints of San Bartolomé at the foot of the mountain of La Galgo. It dates from the 16th century. Their white walls house the Virgin of Nuestra Señora de La Piedad ( Our Lady of Piety ). Close to two vantage points offer views of the whole community.
  • The pilgrimage chapel of Santa Lucia, which holds the statue of the Virgin of Santa Lucia, which originates from Antwerp ( 16th century).
  • The Weber Distelfeld of Martin Luis; located between Tenagua and San Juan de Puntallana, for a distance of three kilometers, the scientifically interesting location of the Barranco del Agua (Canyon of the water). This is one of the places where the endemic Canarian plants which love the dryness, are particularly numerous. The Weber include thistle, spurge and broom.
  • Piedra Llana is 2,321 meters, the highest point of the municipality. He is part of the Natural Park of Las Nieves, and is located on the crest of Taburiente. Here are traces of the indigenous people ( Guanches ) to be found, there are remains of huts, stone piles, rock carvings, pottery and stone fragments to be found. On the foothills of the mountain is the work which, devoted to the artist and environmentalist from Lanzarote, César Manrique in the study of the cosmos of the unity of the peoples.
