El retablo del Maese Pedro, German Master Peter's Puppet Show is an opera in one act by Manuel de Falla, who also created the libretto based on Miguel de Cervantes ' famous novel " Don Quixote ". The premiere took place on 25 June 1923 in Paris. The German premiere took place on 13 January 1927 in Cologne with a translation into German by Hans Jelmoli. For the opera, the composer chose a chamber music orchestra with harpsichord.

Action

Master Pedro organized a small puppet performance in which Don Quixote is a spectator. The son of Pedro explains to viewers the story: The beautiful Melisendra, daughter of Charlemagne, has come in Arab captivity. Her husband Gayferos she tries to free what he ultimately succeeds. However, they are pursued by many Arabs. Don Quixote is captured by the plot so that the game turned for him in reality. He rushes in to gallantly to help Melisendra and strikes with his sword the puppet characters that follow the king's daughter who heads off. While Don Quixote proud sings a song knight and his supposed prowess celebrates, Master Pedro regrets the loss of his puppets.
