Eli served as a priest of the Israelites in the tabernacle in Shiloh. He was the father of sons Hophni and Phinehas.

According to the Biblical narrative Eli saw in the Tabernacle Hannah, a barren woman who prayed for a child. Eli sent her home with the assurance that their wish will come true. Hanna gave birth on the son of her husband Elkanah, the later prophet Samuel. Due to a vow in the case of a birth, she brought him to the education priest Eli.

Samuel soon noticed that Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests, offerings of the pilgrims stole and prostitutes visited what Eli not approve of, but not sub-band. Once Samuel heard God's call. At the behest of Elis he turned reluctantly from God's decision, Hophni and Phinehas would die soon.

In the war against the Philistines and Hophni Pinchas went with them. They let the ark come from Shiloh, and demonstrated it as divine support of the troops. But Hophni and Pinchas fell in battle, and 30,000 Israelite soldiers. The Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant.

When Eli learned of the disaster, he fell off the chair and broke his neck. After 40 years as a priest, Eli, died at 98 years.

On the edge is noted that Elis daughter in law of Pinchas widow shortly afterwards gave birth to a son whom she named Ichabod ( German: "The glory is departed from Israel away! ").
