Elisabeth of Anhalt-Zerbst (1545–1574)

Elisabeth von Anhalt (* October 15, 1545 in Dessau, † September 26, 1574 in Barby ) was when Elizabeth III. Abbess of free secular pin Gernrode and Frose. She left the pen and was by her marriage Countess of Barby.

Life

Elizabeth was a daughter of Prince Johann II von Anhalt (1504-1551) from his marriage to Margaret (1511-1577), daughter of the Elector Joachim I of Brandenburg.

Elizabeth was in 1565 elected abbess of the imperial abbey of Saint Cyriacus in Gernrode. Their attempts to rehabilitate the indebted Abbey again met with little success, which is why she left office in 1570 again and married. As abbess followed her niece Anna Maria von Anhalt.

They married on July 19, 1570 in Bernburg Count Wolfgang II von Barby and Mühlingen ( 1531-1615 ). Elizabeth came with her brother Prince Joachim Ernst in disputes over the abbey and its claim to Anhalt. The dispute was shortly before the death of Elisabeth compared with they should be paid off with a sum of 76,000 rix-dollars. From their marriage, Elizabeth had a son Christopher, but he died again early on. Elizabeth died of "consumption " and was buried in Barby.
