Elisabeth Therese of Lorraine

Elisabeth Therese of Lorraine (* October 15, 1711 in Luneville, † July 3, 1741 in Turin) was by marriage Queen of Sardinia.

She was born as the eleventh of thirteen children of Duke Leopold of Lorraine and his wife Elisabeth Charlotte of Orléans. Up to your birth eight of the ten siblings were already dead; so she grew up with three brothers and one younger sister. One of her older brothers was Emperor Franz I. Stephan ( he was elected however, only four years after her death to the Emperor ), she was thus a sister of Maria Theresa of Austria.

In 1737, she was with King Charles Emmanuel III. married of Sardinia, which was already twice a widower and father of four children.

The couple had three children together following:

  • Carlo Francesco ( born December 1, 1738 † March 25, 1745 ), Duke of Aosta
  • Maria Vittoria (* June 22, 1740; † July 14, 1742 ), Princess of Savoy
  • Benedetto Maurizio (* June 21, 1741; † January 4, 1808 ), Duke of Chablais

Queen Elizabeth Therese died in 1741 at the age of only 29 years, shortly after the birth of her youngest son. It was first buried in the Turin Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista and transferred in 1786 to the Basilica di Superga.
