Elizabeth Catlett

Elizabeth Catlett (including Elizabeth Catlett Mora, born April 15, 1915 in Washington, DC; † April 2, 2012 in Cuernavaca, Mexico ) was an American- Mexican artist.

Biography

Catlett studied until 1936 at Howard University in Washington, DC and earned here the degree "Bachelor of Arts". She then studied at the University of Iowa, where she graduated in 1940 with the degree "Master of Arts ". Then she studied ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, she studied lithography at the Art Students League and sculpture at Ossip Zadkine, both in New York. Later she was among other things a lecturer in sculpture at Prairie View College in Texas, at the Williard University in New Orleans and the Hampton Institute in Virginia and lecturer in ceramics at the Jefferson School in New York. From 1929 she studied drawing and painting at the just emerged from the Academia de San Carlos Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas ( ENAP ) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ( UNAM). In 1949 she moved to Mexico and joined the Taller de Grafica Popular ( Workshop of the People graphic artist, TGP ) at. In 1962 Catlett received Mexican citizenship. She married Francisco Mora and had three children. From 1955 to 1966 she headed the College of ENAP. From 1963 to 1965 she served as Secretary General of the Taller de Grafica Popular. She has received numerous international awards, including first prize at the American Negro Exhibition in Chicago and the second prize for graphic art at the University of Atlanta. A central theme of the works Catletts are African-American culture and identity. Catlett is an honorary doctor of six universities.
