Elizabeth Jeffreys

Mary Elizabeth Jeffreys ( born July 22, 1941) is a British Byzantinistin and Neogräzistin and Emeritus Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature at Oxford University.

Life

After the visit of Blackheath High School for Girls, London, Jeffreys studied Classics at Girton College, Cambridge, and was with a dissertation on classical motifs in Greek and French romances of the Middle Ages at St Anne 's College, Oxford, a doctorate. She then took research fellowships at the Warburg Institute of the University of London, right on the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies at Harvard University and at the University of Ioannina. Then she held various positions in research and teaching Department of Modern Greek at the University of Sydney and finally received an Australian Senior Research Fellowship. 1996 Jeffreys was appointed Bywater and Sotheby Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature. At the same time she was a Professorial Fellow of Exeter College. Since 2006 she is professor emeritus.

Jeffreys is one of the founding members of the Australian Association for Byzantine Studies ( AABS ) and the Modern Greek Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand ( MGSAANZ ). She has established with other scientific book series Byzantina Australiensia and Modern Greek Studies journal ( Australia and New Zealand) and was for many years editor of the Australian Journal for the History of the Middle Ages, Parergon.

She is an Honorary Fellow of St Anne 's College and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Research priorities

Center of research Jeffreys ' is the interface between the written and oral forms of Greek in the Byzantine millennium to withdraw from the fourth to the fifteenth century, at the unofficial form of censorship prevented the developing project of the vernacular it, even in written form in appearance, although different odds of succeeding. In this regard, Jeffreys has the chronicle of the sixth century (John Malalas ), the courtly poetry and the epic of the twelfth century ( Digenis Akritis ) and romance novels of the 14th century (among other Ο Πόλεμος της Τροάδος, dt: " The Trojan War " ) were examined. Currently, she focuses on the tradition of early modern Greek literature 1150-1700 in manuscripts and early printing.
