Elke Rehder

Elke Rehder ( born May 4, 1953 in Hamburg ) is a German painter, graphic artist and book illustrator.

Life and artistic creation

Training. Chess Designs

Elke Rehder studied art at the 1979-1980 " Heatherley School of Fine Art " in London. 1984-1987 she was a member of the " Paddington Art Society " and the 1986-1996 "Free Painters and Sculptors " in London. At that time it was mainly active as an object artist. It created objects of iron, steel, copper, granite, marble and bronzes using the lost wax. The symbolism of chess is in its London time a priority theme in her art after the motto of Boris Spassky: "Chess is like life ." Since then, she creates large-scale installations and land art projects on chess.

In 1992 she was awarded the highly doped first prize of Bernard Kaufmann Society in Worpswede. From this prize money you could be in Barsbuettel in Hamburg set up his own studio with hand presses for etching and woodcut. In 1991 Elke Rehder the international project " Culture Society Europe ", accompanied by statements of important personalities from the fields of culture, economy and politics. Besides the topic of chess comes since 1993, the study of literature and poetry in their art added. For the love of book art, she founded in 1993 Elke Rehder press in which up to now 21 artist's books, letterpress prints and portfolios are published in small editions. In cooperation with the bookbinding Christian compulsion in Hamburg bibliophile treasures appeared with original artwork. In this context, their memberships in the Society of Bibliophiles, in the Maximilian Society and in the Pirckheimer society in which she collaborated on the board in 1998 to explain. Typography, letterpress and woodcut determine at this time her artistic work.

Elke Rehder participated several times at the Leipzig Book Fair and Frankfurt Book Fair, at Mainz Minipressen Fair and at the " Quod Libet " in Hamburg with their bibliophile works until 2003.
