Eluana Englaro

Eluana Englaro Jolanda Giulia ( born November 25, 1970 in Lecco, † February 9, 2009 in Udine) was an Italian coma patient who fell into a coma after an accident in 1992 and 2009, after 17 years, died in a vegetative state.

Eluana Englaro was 21 years old when she and her car ran off on 18 January 1992 ice off the road and crashed head-on into a wall. After the accident, she fell into a coma. Two years later, told the doctors, her condition was irreversible. Since then, her father fought for the right death of his daughter. A court in Milan proved him right. The Constitutional Court in Rome, this decision was confirmed in November 2008.

On 6 February 2009, the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi tried with an emergency decree to prevent the court confirmed the termination of life-sustaining measures for Eluana Englaro. President Giorgio Napolitano, however, declared that he would not sign the document because of constitutional concerns. Then authorized their family doctors to reduce the artificial diet to it soon entirely. Eluana Englaro died on 9 February 2009.

Against the background of Englaros death of the Italian film director Marco Bellocchio 2012 moved to his ensemble movie Bella Addormentata with Toni Servillo, Isabelle Huppert and Alba Rohrwacher.
