EMD F40C

The EMD F40C is a diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD between March and May 1974 suburban services. It is equipped with a 16-cylinder EMD 645 motor of the type capable of developing 3200 hp ( 2390 kW). The 15 built locomotives have the same frame as the EMD SD40- 2, and are thus also 20.98 m long. They were purchased with public funds, in order to improve the commuter traffic on the lines of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) west and north of Chicago to Elgin and Fox Lake in Illinois. Later, they were part of the locomotive fleet by METRA. 1973 and 1974 identical Amtrak locomotives of the class EMD SDP40F were procured, which, however, were equipped with steam generators.

All locomotives were provided with the commissioning of the new series MP36PH decommissioned in 2003 and 2004. 13 locomotives were sold to leasing companies, while the two vehicles were kept 611 and 614 at the depot Western Avenue. In spring 2009, the vehicles were 611 and 614 reactivated for regular use on the former suburban lines of the Milwaukee Road, to compensate for the lack of vehicle during the renovation work on the oldest vehicles in the series EMD F40PH. The F40C count along with the EMD SD70MAC the Alaska Railroad for the last six-axle diesel locomotives that are still regularly used in passenger rail service in North America.
