Emigre

Emigre Inc. is a US-based graphic design company and one of the first Independent fonts and software publishers ( Foundry ). Emigre was founded in Berkeley, California, by the designers and typographers and Zuzana Licko Rudy VanderLans 1984. The company name (company) originated from the Anglo- French term for émigré émigré, as both company founders originally come from Europe ( VanderLans from the Netherlands, Licko from the former Czechoslovakia).

The approach of Emigre was to use the introduction of the Apple Macintosh by young, rapidly growing desktop publishing market with innovative experimental WYSIWYG screen and PostScript fonts, an attractive design as well as the associated software. Thus, the company was founded in 1984 not inadvertently coincided with the introduction of the Macintosh. Licko and VanderLans, inspired by techno-culture and underground, sat confidently with her radical writings on the move away from traditional standard fonts of the traditional type foundries such as ITC, Monotype or Linotype and looked for alternatives to the then relatively expensive fonts of the emerging software company Adobe, in which Licko previously had worked.

Mostly recorded for the typographer Zuzana Licko writings the responsibility of both the creative potential of contributing as was also responsible for the rendering of fonts on your computer. VanderLans other hand, took on the task of the publisher and cared primarily about the distribution of the in-house magazine Emigre Magazine, which was both a forum for innovative designs and designers, as well as practical example and catalog for Lickos writings. This art print issue of the magazine Raygun became next to the American designer David Carson soon became the insider tip in the California design scene and quickly found on the European market response.
