Emmanuel Séjourné

Emmanuel Séjourné (* 16 July 1961, in Limoges, France ) is a French composer and percussionist with a focus on marimba and vibraphone. His rhythmic at the same time, romantic and energetic music draws as much from the Western classical music from popular culture ( rock, jazz, extra-European music forms).

Training

Emmanuel Séjourné completed first a classical music studies in piano, violin, music history, acoustics and music analysis at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, France. Then, in 1976, where he continued his education he namely in the percussion class of Jean Batigne, the founder and former director of the ensemble Percussions de Strasbourg. Batigne brings him close to the particular contemporary and improvised music. A brilliant student, he is 1980 won Best percussionist, specializing in keyboard percussion instruments. Career

Emmanuel Séjourné is initially one of the most recognized specialists keyboard percussion instruments marimba and vibraphone. Later he moved the focus of his work gradually on the composition, but gives further concerts and also teaches as before. It does so to this day a triple career as composer, performer and educator.

Composer

Séjourné composed for orchestra, as well as for chamber ensemble or soloist. As a convinced eclectic he is interested in everything that goes beyond the scope of pure concert music. His works also include platforms, ballet and film music. He composes in this area, among others, for the radio station France Culture, the German television stations ARD and ZDF and the Franco-German cultural channel Arte.

Intrigued by the idea of combining different forms of artistic expression, he began in 1984 to compose for the theater. A year later he received the award for Best stage music in the off part of the Avignon theater festival. On the occasion of the jubilee "2000 years of Strasbourg " commissioned him a place with the composition of music for a piece of the Opera Ballet, entitled Les Envahisseurs. Another sign of his continuing interest in the performing arts alive is the 1998 piece composed Planète Clavier, commissioned by the festival grief for the ensemble percussion Clavier de Lyon. The burlesque and original work will be performed in the following three years, more than 120 times. From his preference for the combination of different forms of expression reflects the piece Famim, commissioned and premiered in 2001 by jazz pianist Michael Borstslap and the Amsterdam Percussion Group. He is also author of concerts for percussion and orchestra, two of which have found a wide international audience. Composed in 1999 and premiered by the Orchestre d' Auvergne Concerto for vibraphone and string orchestra is extremely well received by critics. The Luxemburger Wort describes it as "living proof of the great boom of percussion music and the creative vitality of contemporary music. " Also in 2006, composed by Bogdan Bácanu commissioned and listed with the Salzburg Soloists Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra quickly became the indispensable part of the marimba repertoire. Bácanu and Salzburg Soloists play it in consequence also for their album True Colors in Classic Concert Records.

Emmanuel Séjourné received the support of numerous clients, including the cities of Arras, Aurillac, Strasbourg and Luxembourg, the Regional Bouches -du- Rhone, the European Institute for choral singing and the Paris Opera as a composer. He also works regularly for other percussion musicians. His works have been recorded about Gary Cook, John Pennington, Ju Percussion Group, Bob Van Sice, Nancy Zeltsman, Marta Air Sara, Katarzyna Mycka, Sylvie Reynaert and the Amsterdam Percussion Group. They belong to the repertoire of many orchestras, especially the Nagoya Philharmonic, Osaka Philharmonic, Sinfonia Toronto, the Croatian Radio Television Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic, the Orchestre Suisse Romande, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Italienne, Camerata de Bourgogne, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre d' Auvergne and the orchestras of Cannes, Nice and Pau.

Percussionist

In 1981 Emmanuel Séjourné together with saxophonist Philippe Geiss the ensemble Noco Music. Their album " Saxophone et Percussion» in 1984 awarded by the Académie du Disque Français with the Grand Prix de l' Audiovisual Europe. 1996 Séjourné, accompanied by the New London Chamber Choir, the soloist of the premiere of " Séance for soprano, mixed chorus, MIDI, vibraphone and electronics," a work by the English composer James Wood, whose original use of the midi -modified vibraphone the new instrument perspectives opened.

These recordings come under the label of Universal, Empreinte Digital and Auvidis. The Marimba Manufacturer Adams supported him as a sponsor.

In addition, Emmanuel Séjourné also plays improvised music and jazz, particularly with the Swiss guitarist Max Lasser, the Swiss percussionist Fritz Hauser and the composer Friedemann, with whom he 2012 for the album "The Concert" the German Jazz Award Gold received in 2012. At the moment he appears regularly in keyboard- drums duo with Sylvie Reynaert.

Pedagogue

Emmanuel Séjourné taught since 1984 keyboard percussion instruments at the Conservatoire / University of Strasbourg, where he currently serves as educational director of the department overall percussion. In 1991, he sets the required State in France aptitude test as a professor successfully. In 1994 he was appointed as an educational consultant for the preparation of such examination to the Ministry.
