Emotional Arithmetic

Emotional Arithmetic is a Canadian film drama directed by Paolo Barzman from the year 2007. It is based on the book by Matt Cohen. The main role embodied Susan Sarandon.

Action

The film deals with the fates of three Holocaust survivors. During World War II, the Jewish author Jakob Bronski protected the English-speaking children Melanie and Christopher in the concentration camp of the French city of Drancy. Their paths separated when Jacob came in their place to Auschwitz.

Approximately forty years later, in 1985, Melanie is the wife of David Winters. They are the parents of grown- Benjamin, who in turn has a young son named Timmy. The marriage of the winter is burdened by David's infidelity. Christopher, Melanie's friend and fellow sufferer from childhood, and Jacob look Melanie in her house on the land in Québec. Christopher suffers from the fact that he survived the Nazi atrocities. Melanie feels as a witness of those events that should not be forgotten. Jealousy awakes in David, when paves a love story. On a summer evening the characters in black and white flashbacks are trying to cope with the haunting memories of the past and their psychological wounds and find a way to a better future.

Background information

The five weeks of shooting took place between November 3, 2006 by September 27. It was filmed in Montreal and mainly in the countryside in the province of Quebec, in Austin / Magog, in an old house near Donald Sutherland's house in George Ville ( Eastern Townships ). The budget was about 6.8 million U.S. dollars.

In early 2007, there were discrepancies between Paolo Barzman and Jefferson Lewis because of the attribution of the scriptwriter, with Barzman feels ignored.

The project was supported by Telefilm Canada and Sodec and is distributed by Seville Pictures. The world premiere of the film took place on 15 September 2007 and that as the closing film at the Toronto International Film Festival 2007 in the Canadian cinema he appeared in April 2008 as a DVD he was entitled Autumn Hearts:. . A New Beginning 22 July 2008 published.

The film is the late Rebecca Yates, a business partner of Suzanne Girard, who died in 1999 and the author Matt Cohen dedicated to the Anna Stratton had worked.
