End of the world

The end of the world geographically denoted the idea of different cultures from a point at which the world in which they lived, ends more or less abruptly.

This idea is typical for folks who the spherical and thus less " endless " form of the earth were not aware of. Colloquially referred to by the end of the world today a particularly secluded spot ( "This is really the end of the world ").

Time is meant by the end of the world.

Use in ancient cultures

  • The Ferro meridian was set to 100 AD by Marinos of Tyre as prime meridian - according to the Canary Islands, the western end of the then-known world. 1884, the prime meridian to its current reference point in Greenwich has been set.
  • The western tip of Cornwall was at times regarded by the Romans as the world's end.
  • Cape Finisterre, 60 km from Santiago de Compostela, on the Costa da Morte in Galicia, was in the Middle Ages before the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus as the end of the world. There was the westernmost end of civilization for the pilgrims.
  • The most south-westerly tip of Europe on the Portuguese Cabo de São Vicente, near the town of Sagres was also formerly known as the end of the world.

Designations used today

  • The westernmost department of France in the west of Brittany is named Finistère, from the Latin Finis terrae, end of the world.
  • At the Oslo Fjord ( Norway), the southern tip of the island of the same Verdens is called end in the municipality Tjøme, which means the end of the world in German.
  • The level in Magglingen ( Switzerland ), on which is a part of the Swiss Gymnastics and Sports School, bears this name.
  • In Engelberg in Switzerland, the abrupt end of the Horbistals is called end of the world.
  • The perspective in the park of Schloss Schwetzingen is popularly referred to as the end of the world.
  • Is the end of the Argentine Federal Highway 3, which is called Fin del mundo, end of the world, on the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego, near the city of Ushuaia. There is also the southernmost terminus of the Pan-American Highway.
  • From today's point of view and especially German New Zealand is known as the land on the other side of the world frequently. Geographically and with a journey time of approximately 30 hours is the country from Europe farthest.
  • In China, a beach on the south coast of Hainan is referred to as the end of the world. The name comes from the fact that 1000 years ago, disgraced public servants were banished there.

Literary terms

  • In Michael Ende's children's books Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver decides to move the protagonists in a desert called end of the world.
  • Wolfgang and Heike hollow leg gave a castle in the book Märchenmond the name end of the world.
