With his second marriage with the rich Adelheid von Lech Gemuend, widow of the late Mark Wart of Marquartstein, Engelbert acquired more possessions in Chiemgau. For these possessions Engelbert created the county Kraiburg - Marquartstein and Vogt was to Baumburg. On the strategic hill above the village Kraiburg he built in the 1100s a fortified castle ( Burg Kraiburg ), which formed the center of this county.

1108 Engelbert was raised by Henry IV as the successor of moss Burgers Burkhard for Margrave of Istria. The Margraviate should be located to the year 1173 in Spannheimer possession. This investiture laid the foundation for the rich and vast possessions in the neighboring Carniola. The increased importance of Spannheimer Equally it can be seen, since the emperor, who had relieved Engelbert I nor the county in Val Pusteria, now courted the favor of the powerful Spannheimer; it seems successful because Engelbert II soon found himself in the wake of Henry V, and participated in the April 13, 1111 at the coronation as emperor in part.

On September 23, 1122 Investiture Controversy of the Emperor and the Pope by the Concordat of Worms was settled. Engelbert II and his brother Hartwig I., Bishop of Regensburg, attended the ceremony as witnesses.

After the death of his brother Henry, who had died on 14 December 1123 Engelbert succeeded him as Duke of Carinthia. For this reason, he divided his possessions among his sons and took them most titles from. In 1135, however, Engelbert II renounced the office of the Duke and Emperor Lothar III. enfeoffed his son Ulrich I. Then came Engelbert in the Benedictine monastery Seeon an im Chiemgau. He died there in 1141 as a monk and was buried there.
