Engelbert III, Margrave of Istria

Engelbert III. ( * Before 1124, † October 6, 1173 ), from the house of Spannheimer, was born the second oldest of six children. His parents were later Duke of Carinthia, Margrave Engelbert II of Istria, and the Countess Uta of Passau from the house of Diepoldsberg Inger- Rapotonen.

Life and work

In 1124 it was Engelberts father Duke of Carinthia. This gave him then the Margraviate of Istria and the Bavarian county Kraiburg. But the title of Margrave of Istria, he led only occasionally. Mainly he bore the title of Margrave of Kraiburg or Margrave of Marquartstein which possessions from his mother's house in the southeastern Upper Bavaria were, on which he chiefly resided.

1135 Engelbert took at the Council of Pisa as an envoy of the Emperor Lothair III. in part, with the request of the Emperor to the Pope to stand aside. He was invested by Pope Innocent II with the Margraviate of Tuscia. Engelbert remained so, but only briefly until about mid- 1136.

Engelbert III. wanted the reputation of Pope Eugene III in 1147. to follow for the second crusade "promised land ". However, it has since appeared that he never took his journey to Jerusalem. Documented, it remains detectable in Bavaria.

In 1156 Engelbert participated in Regensburg at the Reichstag. Margrave Engelbert III. was from 1140 to Mathilde, daughter of Count Berengar I of Sulzbach, married. She died in the year 1165th From this marriage no children originate. Since Engelbert married no more time, he died childless in 1173. Engelbert's possessions were divided for the most part in the house of Spannheimer. Thus obtained his brother Rapoto I, Count of places castle, and later his son, Count Palatine Rapoto II large areas in Upper Bavaria around the county Kraiburg, headquarters of these possessions were Kraiburg and Marquartstein.
