Engelbert I, Count of the Mark

Count Engelbert I. von der Mark († November 16, 1277 at Castle Bredevoort ) was Count of the Mark.

Engelbert was the successor of his father Adolf I as Count of the Mark. Since his brother Otto, who had hitherto been a canon in Liege, after the death of his father retired in the secular state, Engelbert had to give this some castles such as Altena and Blankenstein and the associated country. The threat of fragmentation of property was prevented by the death without heirs of Otto in 1262. After Engelbert has again dominated the entire county.

Engelbert came a short time later with the same Archbishop Engelbert II of Cologne in feud. This led to a series of battles and the troops ravaged the territory of the respective opponent. In 1265 the enemy made ​​peace.

Engelbert of the Mark was married in first marriage to Gwendolyn Blieskastel, in second marriage with Elizabeth of Falkenburg, a niece of the Archbishop of Cologne. Thus, the peace between the two sides has been saved.

Conflicts with Cologne, there was again only under Archbishop Siegfried of Westerburg. He tried his influence on the Rhine and expand in Westphalia. In contrast, closed in 1277 several territorial rulers under the leadership of Simon of Paderborn an alliance. At this also Engelbert was involved.

Engelbert was attacked in the same year during a trip by Hermann von wage and badly wounded. He died at Castle Bredevoort.

His son and successor was Count Eberhard I of the Mark († 1308). This transferred his father to the abbey Cappenberg where it was buried.
