English Bay (Vancouver)

English Bay ( German English Bay ) is a bay in front of the Canadian city of Vancouver. It is located immediately west of the city center and is part of the Strait of Georgia. To the northeast lies the Burrard Inlet, in the southeast False Creek.

The second walk from the West End English Bay Beach is the most popular beach in the vicinity of the city center. Other beaches are on the eastern shore of Sunset Beach, Second Beach and Third Beach. On the south bank are the beaches of Kitsilano Beach, Jericho Beach, Locarno Beach and Spanish bank.

English Bay is the venue for numerous cultural events. The Celebration of Light is a world famous fireworks competition that takes place every summer for two weeks (usually the last of July and the first week of August ). It is the largest fireworks show in the world. On New Year's Day Polar Bear Swim in each of the takes place (hundreds of swimmers plunge into the cold waters ), in summer, the Gay Pride parade.

In the bay often moored large cargo ships waiting for a passage in the Burrard Inlet, where are the docks.

The legal status of the bay is still unknown, because it is claimed as part of the traditional territory of the Squamish still.

Established in 2005, designed logo of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games represents an Inuksuk and bears the name Ilaanaq ( Inuktitut for " friend "). A similar Inuksuk located since the Expo 86 on the beach at English Bay.
