Ennio Marchetto

Ennio Marchetto ( born February 20, 1960 in Venice / Italy) is a world renowned and award-winning comedian and quick-change artist who has developed his own theatrical language. This combines mime, dance, music and the rapid change of its costumes, which are made entirely of cardboard and paper. In the last 18 years Ennio has performed in over 70 countries and more than one million people. His shows have been honored with numerous awards and highly praised by international critics.

Biography

Ennio was born on February 20, 1960 in Venice, in the neighboring house of Carlo Goldoni. In early childhood already inspired him the Disney cartoons, after which it was modeled he cut out paper figures for his little sister and decorations for the Christmas tree. The Carnival in Venice, theater performances and workshops by Lindsay Kemp and dance performances by Pina Bausch brought him then later on the idea of designing their own show.

In the early 1980s designed Ennio extravagant costumes and masks for the Carnival in Venice, who just underwent a renaissance. At that time, Ennio worked in his father's company, a repair shop for espresso machines. All were convinced that he would continue the workshop in the old family tradition, only Ennio not. While he worked there, he lost himself in daydreams and in one of these he saw Marilyn Monroe in front of him - dressed entirely in paper. On the same day he created his first paper costume, with which he brought friends and family laugh and amused the people on the street during Carnival. In 1988 he received the Entertainment Festival Venice for his creations the Golden Lion.

In the following years he created more paper figures. With just a few costumes Ennio presented his show at Zanzara d' Oro, the Golden mosquito, a yearly competition for young comedians. Ennio was there awarded the first prize and soon entered also on television and in cabaret events. He developed more and more characters and people and began to think about your own theater show.

His first attempt on this terrain was a written and staged by Daniele Sala piece, which was about the life of famous around the turn of the century change artist Leopold Fregoli. Ennio sang, recited and turned here in quick succession using his paper costumes. But he quickly realized that this kind of show did not meet his own expectations and finished it after only four performances.

Following the last performance he met Sosthen Hennekam, a fashion and costume designer, had invited the friends to Ennio's show. This encounter was the beginning of a long collaboration. Sosthen devised numerous improvements, such as origami techniques with which it was possible to change the costumes even faster. After a few months Sosthen and Ennio enough costumes were designed for a one hour show. The first appearance on the Festa dell'Unita in Bologna was an instant success, which led to more television appearances and guest services throughout Italy. A year later, the London producer Glynis Henderson saw a video recording of the show and offered Ennio then on to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ennio accepted the invitation. However, half of his figures of Italian origin were - beyond the home she knew no one.

So Ennio created in just two weeks, 18 new " Papp - Stars", including crowd favorites such as Queen Elizabeth II, Freddie Mercury, Tina Turner and the Venus de Milo. The first few days in Edinburgh were very hard; there were only a few spectators and Ennio wished he would have stayed in Venice. But then a first critics to see the show, Malcolm Hay of Time Out magazine. He wrote an enthusiastic article. A few days later, the show was up to the last date sold out and Ennio became a cult star of the festival. From then on, everything went very quickly. After several tours of UK, guest appearances on London's West End and at international festivals and Ennio Sosthen at the Laurence Olivier Awards in 1994 in London nominated in the category Best entertainers. In the same year Granada Television Celebrations, Paper Marilyn produced a one hour documentary about Ennio's life and his artistic career. At the first MTV European Music Awards in Berlin the following year, Ennio appeared together on with stars from his personality repertoire, including Prince, George Michael and Björk. Other international engagements followed: a four-month stint at the Paris Théâtre Grevin, a Germany - tour with Erasure and an appearance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City - just to name a few.
