Enrico Rava

Enrico Rava ( born August 20, 1939 in Trieste ) is an Italian jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player.

Life and work

After first appearances as a pianist in traditional jazz combos, he moved to the trumpet. In 1964, he belonged to a quintet of Gato Barbieri, 1965-1968, he played in the group of Steve Lacy, among others with Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo. From 1969 to 1972 he worked in New York City and played with Bill Dixon and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra and in Escalator over the Hill and belonged to the group of Roswell Rudd. Great attention was also his recordings with Dollar Brand, Archie Shepp Dino Saluzzi or. In his own bands play, inter alia, John Abercrombie, Jeanne Lee, Roswell Rudd, Jean -François Jenny -Clark and Aldo Romano, but also Argentine musician, since he temporarily lived in Buenos Aires, where his wife Graciela worked as a film maker. In the 1970s, he also composed film scores - including for Bernardo Bertolucci.

In the 1980s, he also played with Gil Evans and Cecil Taylor, but also always had his own groups, which initially played in jazz-rock idiom. More and more his interest to the composition and the Italian tradition. In his plate projects Rava, L'Opera Va and Carmen he worked intensively with the implementation of opera arias to jazz. With trumpeter Paolo Fresu Rava has recorded several plates on which he dealt with the trumpet players in the history of jazz (eg Bix, Shades of Chet, Play Miles Davis). The pianist Stefano Bollani first became known in his groups. Since 1997, the trombonist Gianluca Petrella is a member of his quintet. Awards

2002 Rava was awarded the Danish Jazzpar Prize. For his contribution to European contemporary jazz, he received further orders the French Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
