Enrique Pla y Deniel

Enrique Cardinal Pla y Deniel ( born December 19, 1876 in Barcelona, Spain, † July 5, 1968 in Toledo) was Archbishop of Toledo.

Life

Enrique Pla y Deniel studied for his school in Barcelona and Rome, as a seminarian at the Pontifical Spanish College of St. Joseph, the subjects of Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on 25 July 1900, the sacrament of Holy Orders and, after completion of ongoing studies in 1903 in the Archdiocese of Barcelona as a church pastor, a lecturer in the formation of priests and journalist.

Pope Benedict XV. appointed him in 1918 as Bishop of Ávila. He received his episcopal consecration the apostolic nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Francesco Ragonesi, on 8 June 1919. Pope Pius XI. conferred on him in 1935 the leadership of the diocese of Salamanca. During the Spanish Civil War, Enrique Pla y Deniel supported the national movement of General Francisco Franco. Pope Pius XII. entrusted Enrique Pla y Deniel in 1941 with the leadership of the Archdiocese of Toledo and took him on 18 February 1946 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio in the College of Cardinals to. At the same time, he was awarded the Collar of the Order de Isabel la Católica.

Enrique Pla y Deniel took both 1958 and 1963 part of the conclave and participated in the years 1962 to 1965 at the Second Vatican Council. He died on July 5, 1968 in Toledo, and was buried in the local cathedral.
