Eos (yacht)

The Eos in Lyttelton, New Zealand

IMO: 9377456

The Eos is with a length of 92.92 meters ( LOA) or 304.86 feet, the largest yacht in the world. The ship's name is a reference to the " goddess of dawn " from Greek mythology.

Construction

Eos was built in great secrecy within three years to 2006 on the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen for the media mogul Barry Diller from the United States .. The design of the ship comes from Bill Langan.

For the formidable rig Lürssen drew on the experience of sailing yacht specialists Rondal / Huisman from the Netherlands. Equipped with Bermuda sailing three-masted schooner has a pole length of 61 meters above the maximum mast height at which the ship can still pass the most important of the under crossed by the shipping bridges worldwide. The entire sailing technique can be operated remotely with Motorwinschen and roll sailing from the wheelhouse. The Eos has three fore- staysail and three. These are designed as rolling sail with Furlern of Rondal.

A 2007 published in the magazine Harper's Bazaar article According to the Eos was a created by Anh Duong figurehead of the wife of Barry Diller, Diane von Furstenberg.

Equipment

The interior design is by François Catroux. The Eos has a suite for the owner as well as opulent space for 12 guests. Much more is known about the interior. One of the skipper of the Eos, Captain Lucas Alexander, reported 6 bedrooms each with private bathroom. The whole ship would be comparable to a large and rather luxurious high-end villa. Alexander is quoted:

"I enjoy it ... I have long, unstructured hours and an ever-changing itinerary. We do not follow a particular route, but mainly commute between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. "

The crew includes 21 men, including two cooks, three technicians, nine deckhands, captains and stewards.

Largest yacht in the world

Judging by the " LOA " ( LOA) and the Eos is officially the largest sailing yacht in the world and also references the 2006 -built Maltese Falcon in third place, still behind the Athena. This owes Eos their not inconsiderable bowsprit, which undoubtedly belongs to the ship and thus also contributes to the overall length.

Under some experts, however, there is a different opinion, because in their view are " Length over Deck" (English: "Length over deck" LOD) and the " length of the waterline " (English: " Length at waterline ", LWL ) the only true measure of comparability of the size of ships. Judging by the length over deck and also in the length of the waterline exceeds the Maltese Falcon, the Eos with 87 m and 78 m LOD LWL.

Currently, with the C.2157 (102 m) and the Dream Symphony (141 m ) is equal to two new buildings being planned, which should exceed the length of the Eos by far.
