Epaminondas José de Araújo

Epaminondas José de Araújo ( born March 19, 1922 in caiçara, † June 9, 2010 in João Pessoa ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Palmeira dos Índios.

Life

Epaminondas José de Araújo studied from 1939 to 1940 philosophy at the diocesan seminary in Paraíba and theology from 1941 to 1945 in João Pessoa. He received on 12 August 1945, the ordination. In 1946 he became a professor at the diocesan seminary in João Pessoa. He was vicar in 1951 Alagoinha, 1952-1953 in Araruna and 1954-1956 in Alagoa Grande. In 1956, he completed a postgraduate course in religious studies and sociology in Rio de Janeiro. In 1958 he was appointed vicar at the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paraíba.

Pope John XXIII. appointed him on 14 December 1959 Bishop of Ruy Barbosa. The Apostolic Nuncio to Brazil, Armando Lombardi, consecrated him on March 27 of next year to the bishop; Co-consecrators were Eugênio de Araújo Sales, Auxiliary Bishop of Natal, and Otavio Barbosa Aguiar, Bishop of Campina Grande. His motto was " In Tuo verb ".

From 1962 to 1965 he was a Council Father at Vatican II. Pope Paul VI. appointed him on October 27, 1966 Bishop of Anápolis and on 5 June 1978 concerning the Bishop of Palmeira dos Índios. From 1966 to 1978 he was a member of the Brazilian Bishops Conference CNBB.

On November 28, 1984 Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation. He died of a cancerous condition.
