Loquat ( Eriobotrya japonica)

The loquats ( Eriobotrya ) are a genus of pome fruit crops ( Pyrinae ) in the rose family ( Rosaceae ). The best known representative of the genus is the loquat ( Eriobotrya japonica), which is in Europe as an ornamental plant and, increasingly, also known for its delicious fruit.

Description

Eriobotrya species are evergreen trees and shrubs. The most stalked leaves are simple. The leaf margins are smooth or serrated. Stipules are present.

The terminal, paniculate inflorescences contain many flowers. The hermaphroditic, flowers are radial symmetry fünfzählig. The five sepals are also in the fruits still clearly visible. The five white or yellow petals are nailed. There are 20 stamens present. The under constant ovary consists of two to five carpels. The often hairy two to five pens are fused only at their base.

At the apple-shaped fruit of the recurved sepals are clearly visible. The fruits contain only a few large seeds.

The genus includes about 26 to 30 species in eastern Asia. In China, you will find 14 species, of which three are endemic:
