Ermengol III, Count of Urgell

Ermengol III. the Barbastro (Catalan Ermengol el de Barbastre; * June 1032, † 1065 in Barbastro ) was a Count of Urgell from the House of Barcelona. He was a son of the Count of Urgell Ermengol II († 1038/39 ).

The first years of his reign had Ermengol been under the tutelage of his mother Velasquita " Constança ", the ownership sold on April 4, 1048 in his name to the valleys of Andorra to the bishopric of Urgell. According to the deed to the sale, he was at this time fifteen years and ten months old. After his personal power, he had allied himself with Count Raymond Berengar I of Barcelona against the Count Raymond Wilfred of Cerdanya. In the year 1064 itself Ermengol had participated in the initiated by Pope Alexander II campaign against the Moors, which is often characterized by historians as a " Vorkreuzzug ". After the conquest of Barbastro he was employed here by King Sancho Ramírez of Aragon as governor. When the Moors conquered the city the following year, Ermengol was killed in battle. He was buried in the abbey of Sant Pere Àger.

Ermengol was ( called 1036 ) married successively with Adalaiz, Clemencia ( called 1059 ) and Sancha ( 1065 and 1072/73 named ) of Aragón. The latter was a daughter of King Ramiro I of Aragon. From his first marriage two children have emerged:

  • Ermengol IV († 1092 ), Count of Urgell.
  • Isabella; 1 ∞ with King Sancho Ramírez of Aragon; 2 ∞ with Count William Raymond of Cerdanya.
