Ermin of Lobbes

Ermin (Latin Erminus; Erwin ) of Lobbes (* Saint- Erme - Outre- et- Ramecourt at Sissonne, France, † April 25 737 in Lobbes, Belgium) was Abbot-Bishop of Lobbes.

Ermin came from a noble and wealthy Frankish family and was born in Herly ( Ercliacum ). ( The village was later renamed in his honor and is now known as Saint- Erme - Outre- et- Ramecourt. ) He studied at the cathedral school in Laon and was by the local bishop Madalgar / Madalgaire (about 682-713 ) ordained a priest. He was chaplain and confessor Madalgars and canon of the cathedral of Laon.

In Laon, he met the later canonized Ursmar Abbot-Bishop of Lobbes know, and this moved Ermin to enter as a monk in the Benedictine Abbey of Lobbes at Charleroi. Ermin gave the Abbey extensive landholdings in the room Laon; in a directory of 869 are: Herly, Outre, Ramecourt, Ecorest -lez- Chèvres, Berrieux, Lierval and Juvincourt. In Herly, Ermin birth, established the monks from Lobbes a priory, whose name was later changed to Saint- Erme.

As Ursmar for reasons of age and because of his failing health, resigned from his position as abbot and bishop, Ermin was on Ursmars proposal until his coadjutor, then his successor. It was 713, after the death Ursmars ordained a bishop and was almost 25 years Abbot-Bishop of Lobbes. He wrote a Vita of his teacher and predecessor, St. Ursmar.

After his death he was initially buried in the Church of Our Lady of the Abbey Lobbes. In 1409 his remains were transferred to St. Ursmer in Lobbes in the crypt of the Collegiate. One of his successors as abbot of Lobbes, Anson, wrote the history of the two Abtbischöfe Usmar and Ermin. Ermin is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint, and his feast day is April 25. In art he is represented in Abtsgewand with book.
